Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is the 5th mission founded by Father Junípero Serra and the but mission to take an 50-shaped chapel. Today the mission is located right in the heart of San Luis Obispo, which is a bustling college town forth the coast of California. The mission is gratuitous to visit, but I found it to exist underwhelming compared to others I saw on 24-hour interval three of my mission route trip. It is still a cracking cease forth Highway 101 though, read on for all the details.

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is located only minutes from the Broad St exit off Highway 101 in downtown San Luis Obispo. At that place is parking along the street that is $one.25 an hour, but it can be hard to find during peak times since it is right in downtown San Luis Obispo (a pop higher town).

The Mission

Later parking, you lot tin can make your mode to the church and souvenir shop right nearly the archway. This mission is different than the others equally you do non demand to pay, and at that place is not a map, and so you merely go where you want at your ain pace.

The gift shop has all of the things you take no doubt become accustomed to seeing at the other missions you have visited, such as books on the missions, crosses, and other tourist souvenirs.

Backside the gift shop is a pocket-size five-room museum that has a lot of significant artifacts from the mission history and Indian history effectually the area also.

In the backroom, there is even a map of the early land borders for the canton and a case with guns from the era.

After walking through the museum, yous volition exit out into the mission's courtyard.

mission san luis obispo-9

As with other courtyards, this one is well manicured and kept up. The plants and flowers blooming were fantastic, and it was peaceful to walk around them.

mission san luis obispo-8

Since the courtyard is not closed in similar the other missions (yous are not paying to run into information technology), information technology was hard to tell where the mission concluded, and other more mod parts of the town began. I didn't know whether to go along walking in a direction in hopes of seeing something from the mission'south history or to plough around.

mission san luis obispo-11

There is a beautiful gear up of iii old mission bells hanging prominently in the courtyard though, and there is an old well that is picturesque corporeality the plants and walkways.

mission san luis obispo-17

After spending time in the courtyard, you will want to enter the chapel. This chapel is open to the public whenever the mission is open, so information technology can be busier than others. It is large though, so there is room to move around.

mission san luis obispo-15

The chapel is unique in that information technology is the merely mission chapel to grade an Fifty shape. All of the other ones are but 1 long room without the side room like this i has. Since I was visiting the missions in a row, information technology was fun to encounter different architecture at some of them as that gives them personality.

mission san luis obispo-14

The altarpiece here is a lot less ornate than many of the previous missions I take been too. Besides, the lesser of the L shape chapel is different than the main chapel every bit it let in a lot more natural light and was much brighter.

mission san luis obispo-16

There were likewise a few small alcoves that you lot could pray in on this side as well.

The Exterior

Subsequently finishing looking at the chapel, I headed outside to see the mission'southward fountain. The fountain was full of green water though, and not running, so it was non as picturesque equally others.

mission san luis obispo-18

In the front of the mission, there was the statue of Father Serra and a large wooden cross. Also, off to the side, there is the El Camino Existent bell that is the official mark for the road and at each mission.

Mission Court

Lastly, this mission has a big courtyard in front, which was made by the city, and which was beautiful to stroll effectually. There was a fountain with a bronze bear playing in the h2o and a few awnings you can sit under.

mission san luis obispo-24

If yous have more fourth dimension in your parking meter, there is also a pocket-sized path that walks along the stream here and is worth checking out.

All in all, the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is a great free cease on a route trip with lots of history and artifacts. If y'all are visiting only a few missions though, it is not i of my personal favorites. You can read near how you lot can road trip to all of the missions here and let me know what you retrieve in the comments.
